Designing Beyond Color

When couples begin planning their wedding flowers, the conversation often starts with color. Soft neutrals, muted pastels, something bold and seasonal — color matters, but it’s rarely the whole story.

Florals don’t exist in isolation. They live within a space, alongside architecture, light, movement, and the way people gather. The most successful wedding designs are built with an understanding of how all of those elements work together.

Rather than designing arrangements as individual moments, I approach floral design as part of a larger composition. How tall ceilings affect scale. How long tables guide the eye through a room. How repetition, spacing, and placement create a sense of rhythm throughout the day.

Movement plays a quiet but important role. Loose, hand-gathered arrangements allow stems to reach, bend, and soften their surroundings. Negative space is intentional — it gives the design room to breathe and prevents florals from feeling heavy or overly structured.

Texture matters just as much as hue. Delicate blooms paired with structural elements, airy ingredients layered with grounded greenery, and subtle shifts in form all contribute to a design that feels natural and balanced rather than overly styled.

This approach allows the flowers to support the experience of the day rather than compete with it. Guests move through the space comfortably. Tables feel inviting. Ceremony settings feel grounded and cohesive.

Color may be the entry point, but thoughtful floral design goes deeper — responding to the environment, the season, and the way a space is meant to be experienced.

That’s where the story truly begins.
